Other ways we’re helping justice agencies…
showcasing practitioner voices
Successful change-makers have much to share with and learn from one another. Interviews and other first-person accounts can help capture lessons and share them with reformers around the world.
“To Prosecute: Interviews About Early Decision-making” (July 2020) captures lessons and aspirations from over 20 prosecutors from around the U.S. The interviews focus on early screening and diversion strategies, but the themes extend to trust-building, addressing racial bias, data tracking, and partnering better with police and communities.

MESSAGING FAIRNESS
When we ask participants of the justice system want they want, the answer includes fairness. But fairness is more than just fair outcomes. People want to be treated fairly and with dignity, feel heard and like they understand what’s happening, and see that decisions are made without bias and based on their individual needs. This concept is known as procedural justice.
In short, it’s not enough to be fair, you must be seen as fair. That requires deliberate messaging.
Human-centered messaging - both through interpersonal communication and through websites, signage, and other public-facing tools- can help address this gap and spur changes in substantive fairness.
