Fairness Challenge Pilot Project

With support from the State Justice Institute, the Fairness Challenge Pilot Project includes local pilot interventions and national trainings and resources to systematically build out the field’s knowledge and practice of procedural justice. This project builds upon research-informed skills and practices that promote litigant perceptions of fairness.

PROJECT ACTIVITIES

  1. Support and test concrete practice improvements with judges across four pilot courts

  2. Lead two national Fairness Challenge trainings for judges and other court professionals nationally

PILOT COURTS

Four jurisdictions were selected through a national solicitation, with 26 judicial officers opting in, to participate as pilot courts in this project. Participation included 6 months of training for participating judicial officers and real-time litigant feedback about their perceptions of fairness.

  • King County Superior Court (WA)

  • La Crosse & Monroe County Circuit Courts (WI)

  • Westminster Municipal Court (CO)

  • Boone & Winnebago Counties, 17th Judicial Circuit Court (IL)

Read the report documenting what we learned from these judicial officers and the over 1,300 litigants who provided feedback along the way.

national #FAIRNESSCHALLENGE TRAININGS

This project also supported annual remote trainings at no cost to judges and other court professionals. Fairness Challenge trainings are remote, asynchronous, and fun! Our 2025 Fairness Challenge brought together over 250 judges and other court professionals. Until next time, read about our past Fairness Challenge efforts.
