#FairnessChallenge

We lead an annual #FairnessChallenge where hundreds of judges and other legal professionals nationally spend a few minutes each day advancing their fairness practices in specific ways.

With a bit of focus and support, we can leverage the extensive research and tools on the topic of procedural fairness to invest in this worthy topic. We hope you’ll join us for the next one!

These efforts are centered around the evidence-based framework of procedural justice (also known as procedural fairness), which has been shown to improve trust and confidence in courts and increase voluntary cooperation and compliance with court orders. Read more about the concept here.

Past Fairness ChallengeS

August 2023 & June 2022: We partnered with judges and other court professionals for a 2 to 4-week sprint centered on court fairness. Exercises focused on concrete, pragmatic strategies for courts to get feedback from their primary audience: court users.

April 2021: The 2021 Fairness Challenge was led in partnership with the National Center for State Courts with support from the State Justice Institute. This inaugural Challenge provided a primer on four elements of procedural justice and included participation awards for courts who engaged the most court professionals in the 4-week process. The top-participant courts are listed below; participation spanned the country as shown on the map at right.

Over 500 professionals from 65 courts have signed up to spend a few minutes each day in April 2021 as part of a national #FairnessChallenge.
